Why is your job awesome?
My clients come to me because they are looking to make an intrepid leap in a new direction. My job is awesome because I get to suggest innovative ways of doing business, and then I get to engineer and foster that change. This involves empowering organizations to creatively advocate for themselves and their constituents whether that’s before an elected body at the state or city level or if it involves educational advocacy in communities in which they are not currently engaged. I enjoy connecting my various networks and unexpected allies to provide support and collaboration for my clients. Advising proper Board management or passing a piece of legislation is always satisfying, but what makes my job awesome is my ability to build a framework that gives organizations permission to be inventive, original, and emboldened to meet their business goals.

What’s the first song on your pump up playlist?
i by Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar is an intellectual poet who tells the truth about our society while also delivering an uplifting message. The song not only gets me moving, but also gives me confidence!

You have a time machine that’ll take you to any year, present or future. Where do you go?
Now. The past hasn’t always been good to Black people in America and I can only pray that there will be an improvement in the future. The best time to be a Black person in America is today.

One place in Colorado everyone should visit
The State Capitol! Take a tour. You’ll learn something!

Favorite movie
The Royal Tenenbaums

What is the best gift you have ever received?
My dad gave me the gift of education. He always told me that no one could take away what I put in my brain. I can not thank him enough for sacrificing in his own life so that I could go to the very best schools to make myself better and in turn make the world a better place. He’d be happier if I earned my PhD, but then we’d having nothing to argue about over Thanksgiving Dinner!

If there was a movie made about your life, who would play you and why?
By the time someone gets around to making a movie about my life, we won’t be watching full length movies anymore. Instead, I’ll probably just make a Snapchat story where I tell you the meaning of life, only for it to be deleted 24 hours later.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in life?
Celebrate the victories and be thankful for the struggle. I don’t celebrate every victory with a glass of champagne, but I do give myself the space to pat myself on the back and say, ‘atta girl! I also remember to be thankful for the struggles because they build a foundation in which you learn and grow.
